Bronchiolitis
What is Bronchiolitis?
Bronchiolitis is a viral infection that causes inflammation and congestion in the small airways (bronchioles) of the lungs. It primarily affects infants and young children (under 2 years old), leading to breathing difficulties.
Causes of Bronchiolitis:
🦠 Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) – The most common cause.
🦠 Other Viruses – Influenza, parainfluenza, adenovirus, or rhinovirus.
🧬 Weakened Immune System – Premature babies or those with chronic illnesses are more vulnerable.
❄️ Seasonal Changes – More common in winter and early spring.
🏠 Exposure to Smoke or Pollution – Increases the risk of respiratory infections.
Symptoms of Bronchiolitis:
😷 Runny nose & nasal congestion – First signs, similar to a cold.
💨 Wheezing or Noisy Breathing – Due to airway narrowing.
🌡️ Mild fever – May or may not be present.
💦 Coughing – Can worsen over days.
😫 Rapid or Difficult Breathing – Flaring nostrils, belly movement while breathing.
🍼 Feeding Difficulties – Less appetite, dehydration risk.
😴 Fatigue & Irritability – Due to breathing distress.
