SLE
What is SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)?
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues and organs, causing inflammation and damage to multiple systems, including the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, and brain. It is a lifelong condition with periods of flare-ups and remission.
Causes of SLE:
🧬 Genetics – Family history increases the risk.
🦠 Infections – Viral and bacterial infections may trigger lupus.
🌞 Sunlight Exposure – UV rays can cause flare-ups in some people.
💊 Medications – Certain drugs (e.g., hydralazine, procainamide) can trigger drug-induced lupus.
🌡 Hormonal Changes – More common in women (especially during pregnancy and menopause).
