Bronchitis
What is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. This leads to coughing, mucus production, chest discomfort, and difficulty breathing. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term).
Types of Bronchitis:
🔹 Acute Bronchitis – Usually caused by a viral infection (like the flu or common cold) and lasts a few weeks.
🔹 Chronic Bronchitis – A long-term condition, often due to smoking or air pollution, leading to persistent cough for at least three months per year for two consecutive years.
Causes & Risk Factors:
🦠 Viral Infections – Flu, cold viruses, or RSV (respiratory syncytial virus).
🦠 Bacterial Infections – Less common but can worsen symptoms.
🚬 Smoking & Secondhand Smoke – Major cause of chronic bronchitis.
🏭 Air Pollution & Dust – Irritates the lungs and increases risk.
🧬 Weak Immune System – Infants, elderly, or those with lung diseases are more vulnerable.
❄️ Cold Weather & Seasonal Changes – Can trigger or worsen symptoms.
Symptoms of Bronchitis:
💨 Persistent cough – Can last weeks; produces mucus (clear, white, yellow, or green).
💥 Chest discomfort or tightness – Feeling of heaviness in the chest.
🤧 Shortness of breath – Especially after exertion.
🌡️ Low-grade fever & chills – Mostly in acute bronchitis.
😴 Fatigue & weakness – Due to persistent coughing.
🎶 Wheezing – A whistling sound while breathing.
