Osteoporosis

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes weak and brittle bones, making them more prone to fractures. It occurs when bone density decreases, leading to a higher risk of breaks, especially in the hips, spine, and wrists. Often called the “silent disease,” osteoporosis may not show symptoms until a fracture occurs.

Causes & Risk Factors:

🦴 Aging – Bone loss increases with age, especially after 50.
👩 Gender – More common in women, especially after menopause.
🧬 Genetics – Family history of osteoporosis raises the risk.
🍫 Low Calcium & Vitamin D Intake – Weakens bones over time.
🚬 Smoking & Alcohol – Slows down bone formation.
⚖️ Sedentary Lifestyle – Lack of weight-bearing exercises.
💊 Certain Medications – Long-term steroid use (corticosteroids) can reduce bone density.

Symptoms of Osteoporosis:

🚶 Loss of Height – Due to compression fractures in the spine.
🔄 Stooped Posture (Hunched Back) – Weak bones cause spinal curvature.
💥 Frequent Fractures – Especially in hips, spine, and wrists.
💢 Back Pain – Due to collapsed vertebrae.
