Lichen planus

What is Lichen Planus?

Lichen Planus is a chronic inflammatory skin and mucosal condition that causes itchy, purple or reddish flat-topped bumps on the skin, and white, lacy patches inside the mouth or genitals. It is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the skin and mucous membranes.


Causes of Lichen Planus:

🛑 Autoimmune reaction (immune system attacks healthy skin/mucosa)
💊 Medications (NSAIDs, beta-blockers, antimalarial drugs)
🦠 Viral infections (Hepatitis C is linked to some cases)
🧬 Genetics (family history may play a role)
Allergic reactions (to dental fillings, metals, or chemicals)


Types & Symptoms:

1️⃣ Cutaneous Lichen Planus (Skin) – Purple, itchy, flat bumps, often on wrists, ankles, or lower back.
2️⃣ Oral Lichen Planus (Mouth) – White lace-like patches (Wickham’s striae) on gums, tongue, or inner cheeks, sometimes painful.
3️⃣ Genital Lichen Planus – Painful red or erosive lesions in genital areas.
4️⃣ Scalp (Lichen Planopilaris)Hair loss and scarring on the scalp.
5️⃣ Nail Lichen PlanusRidges, splitting, or nail loss.
